Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine
|
The Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine lies a few blocks walk from the Pacific Ocean, on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, California. It was founded by Paramahansa Yogananda, a swami who wrote Autobiography of a Yogi.
The Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF) was founded in the 1920s when Yogananda emigrated to the United States. He taught a method of meditation called kriya yoga. He developed a devoted following, who maintain ashrams in Hollywood and Encinitas, on the coast of Southern California, and even returned to India on extended visits during the 1920's and 1930's.
Yogananda (Paramahansa means swan) encouraged swans to live at the Lake Shrine; their large nests can be seen in this locale. Some of the ashes of Gandhi were distributed to SRF and lie at this shrine as well. Anyone can visit this location.Template:California-geo-stub
