Savage Arms
|
Savage Arms was founded in 1894 by Arthur Savage in Utica, NY. Perhaps best-known for the Savage Model 99 which is a hammerless lever action rifle, which is no longer in production. Savage Arms merged with Driggs-Seabury Ordnance during the World War I. In 1920 Savage Arms bought Stevens Arms.
Savage ran into financial trouble in the 1980's and filed for bankruptcy protection in 1988. Production was reduced to the Model 110 bolt action rifle. A turn-around was made in the 1990's and today the company has a wide variety of firearms available, as well as a growing reputation for accurate, inexpensive firearms.
According to company officials, Savage Arms exports 97 per cent of its rifles, mostly to the US (Testimony of Mr. Barrie King, Vice-President and General Manager, to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs, November 24, 1997).
