Santhal Parganas

Santhal Parganas constitute one of the administrative Divisions of Jharkhand state, India. Presently, this administrative division has five districts, namely, (Godda, Deoghar, Dumka, Sahibganj and Pakur). Formerly, Santhal Parganas comprised a district of the same name, in undivided Bihar state, India. Earlier to that, in 1885, during British India, Santhal Parganas was created as a district, and was a part of the Bengal Presidency. Santhal Parganas derive its name from two words, 'Santhal', also spelt as Santal, a major tribe of India and 'Parganas', an Urdu word, meaning, province.
All the five districts have large concentration of Santals, who speak Santali (Santhali), an Austro-Asiatic language. They had famously rebelled against the British in 1857-1858 under the leadership of Sido Murmu and his brother Kanhu Murmu.
