S1C reactor

The S1C (first Submarine core by Combustion Engineering) reactor was built in Windsor Locks, Connecticut as a prototype for a new class of submarines, the USS Tullibee (SSN-597), which was in fact powered by an S2C reactor. The propulsion is unusual in that it is electric drive, rather than steam turbine.
The reactor was situated on land and known as S1C Nuclear Power Training Unit (NTPU). Except for its size, and the fact that it had turbo-electric drive, the system layout was similar to the S5W reactor plants being used in most nuclear-powered submarines at the time. This was very beneficial to the graduates for their future qualification when they got assigned to their first nuclear-powered submarine.
The S1C plant at the Windsor site in Connecticut was shutdown in March 1994, and defueling was completed in 1995
