Ruth J. Simmons is Brown University's current and 18th president, sworn in on July 3, 2001. She is the first Black president of an Ivy League university and the first non-interim female president of Brown. She is also a professor in the Department of Comparative Literature and the Department of Africana Studies. Before her appointment at Brown, Simmons was president of Smith College since 1995.
Simmons graduated from Dillard University in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1967 and received her Ph.D. in Romance languages and literatures from Harvard University in 1973. She is originally from Texas.
She currently serves on the boards of Goldman Sachs Group, Texas Instruments and Pfizer. [1] (http://www.theyrule.net)
Simmons supported Carol Moseley-Braun in her 2004 campaign for the Democratic Nomination for President.
