Russel Erxleben
|
Russel Erxleben is a former American college football player who played for the University of Texas Longhorns during the 1970s. On October 10th, 1977 he kicked a 67-yard field goal that is still tied for the longest one ever kicked in NCAA Division I and is one of the longest ever kicked in competitive football. The record has been tied on two subsequent occasions, one occurring only five days after Erxleben's original kick; however the record is still generally regarded as his since he was the first to achieve it. It should be noted that this achievement involved the use of a one-inch tee, which was perfectly legal in college football at that time but which has since been banned, and occurred on artificial turf, which although still widely used, is far less common than it was at that time. Both of these factors help to account for why the record remains unbroken as of 2004.
