Rogaine

Rogaine (also branded as Regaine outside the US) is the brand name for Minoxidil, when used as a topical drug to treat male pattern baldness. The solution is applied to the scalp daily to stimulate hair growth and help prevent hair loss. It is available over-the-counter (OTC) in the U.S. in a 2% Minoxidil solution and also 5% Minoxidil solution (Rogaine Extra Strength).

Clinical studies of the effectiveness of topical Minoxidil have shown both a slowing of hair loss and some regrowth of hair in some (but not all) patients. These studies also show that these measurable changes disappear fairly rapidly (within one to two years) after stopping treatment.

A sporting event called ROGAINE (Rugged Outdoor Group Activity Involving Navigation and Endurance) is essentially a form of Orienteering.

Rogaining is the sport of long distance cross-country navigation in which teams of two to five members visit as many checkpoints as possible in twenty-four hours. Teams travel entirely on foot, navigating by map and compass between checkpoints in terrain that varies from open farmland to hilly forest. A central base camp known as a "hash house" provides hot meals throughout the event and teams may return at any time to eat, rest or sleep. Teams travel at their own pace and anyone from children to grandparents can experience the personal satisfaction that comes from cross-country navigation at their own level of competition and comfort. The normal length for a Rogaine is 24 hours, but shorter variations such as 6, 8, 12 and 15 hour events are often held concurrently. Depending on the terrain, experienced rogaining teams can cover more than one hundred kilometers over the 24hr.

Other forms of rogaining are popular, particularly in Australia. Popular variations include metrogaining which is typically around 6 hours and held in predominately urban areas.

Cyclegains are another variation which usually run for 6 hours in areas with trails suitable for mountainbiking.

The International Rogaining Federation (http://www.rogaining.com/) has a more complete history of the sport. The 7th World Rogaining Championship (http://www.nswrogaining.org/WRC7/WRC7.htm) will be held in October 2006 in Australia. The Australian Rogaining Association (http://rogaine.asn.au/ara/) is the peak body for state rogaining associations in Australia.
