Rebecca Jean Smallbone (born July 26, 1977), better known by the stage name Rebecca St. James, was born in Sydney, Australia, to David and Helen Smallbone. She is the oldest of seven children. At the age of thirteen Rebecca was the lead vocalist at her Christian school. During that year, Carman asked her to open shows during his Australian tour. That same year she recorded her first album, Refresh My Heart. In 1991 she moved to the United States upon signing with ForeFront Records, and took her stage name at the label's request. She currently resides in Franklin, TN.
In 2000, Rebecca won the Grammy for Best Rock Gospel Album. Rebecca became the eighth Australian act to win a Grammy, joining Olivia Newton-John, Rick Springfield, Men at Work, Helen Reddy, Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Bee Gees, and Barry Gibb.
