RIP

The abbreviation or acronym RIP has several different meanings:
- It can stand for "Rest In Peace", a phrase which often appears on tombstones. The expression comes originally from the Latin, requiescat in pace, and the English version is an example of backronym formation (although the two phrases mean the same thing).
- In BBSing, RIP stands for Remote imaging protocol or RIPscrip, a method of sending graphic imagery over a BBS.
- In computer networking, RIP stands for the Routing Information Protocol for either IP, IPX, or IDP.
- In the pre-press industry, RIP stands for raster image processor.
- In the generation of MP3 files, "RIPping" refers to the process of reading analogue CD (such as .wav or .cda files (a process that is similar to the raster image processing) and converting them to digital .mp3 files.
- In British politics, RIP stands for the British government's controversial Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000, which sets out rules for intercepting communications on all telecommunications and postal networks, which includes access to communication over the Internet.
