Qamishli ( Arabic: القامشلي, Kurdish: Qamişlo, Aramaic: ܩܡܫܠܝ) is a city in northeast Syria on the border with Turkey and close to Iraq (Ancient Assyria). It has a population of about 200,000. It is part of the Al Hasakah governorate and the center of an administrative district. The city was founded by Christian Assyrians, as a result of the horrible brutal genocide that happened to them in the years 1914-1922 in what is now Turkey. Today Assyrians, Arabs, Kurds and Armenians live side by side in the city. The city, however, was the site of Kurdish riots in 2004 that left 30 people dead. Tha majority of the cities inhabitants are Kurds.
It has an international airport with IATA code KAC.
