This article is about the term's most basic meaning; a purse is also a race track term.

A purse (also known as a handbag) is a small, often fashionably-designed bag used to hold items such as a wallet, keys, tissues, makeup, a hairbrush, pepper spray, and/or a gun.
Purses were apparently first developed in France in their modern form. They are usually carried by women, though men sometimes carry one as a smaller alternative to a knapsack; such a purse is sometimes self-consciously termed a "murse" (a portmanteau for a "man purse").
Coin purses are small purse, just large enough to hold money and cards.
In the United Kingdom, a purse is a money container similar to a wallet, but typically used by women and including a compartment for coins.
