Propitiation
|
Propitiation is a theological term describing an atoning sacrifice.
In Christian theology, the death of Jesus on the cross appeased the justice and wrath of God and effected a reconciliation between God and humankind. Christian theology relates this to the 'mercy seat,' or propitiatory, in the Holy of Holies in the Jewish temple. This idea about sin and man's actions is associated in some Christian theological systems with indemnity, imputation, and Substitutionary atonement.
Judaism teaches that atonement comes through the study and practice of the Torah's 613 commandments.
