Project Vote Smart (PVS) is a non-profit, non-partisan research organization that collects and distributes information on candidates for public office in the United States. It covers candidates and elected officials in five basic areas: background information, issue positions (via the NPAT), voting records, campaign finances, and interest group ratings. This information is distributed via their web site, a toll-free phone number, and print publications (most notably, the Voter's Self Defense Manual, copies of which are available for free at in many libraries in the U.S. during election years).
They also provide records of public statements, voter registration forms for every state, contact information for state and local election offices, polling place and absentee ballot information, ballot measure descriptions for each state (where applicable), links to federal and state government agencies, and links to political parties and issue organizations.
PVS was inaugurated in 1992 and is financed by donations of its more than 45000 members and by grants from private foundations.
