It is the administrative center of the Branicevo District of Serbia.
Its name means "fire-town" in Serbian. In 2003 the city has total population of ca. 60,000.
It is historically known as the site of the signing the Treaty of Passarowitz.
It is also where former President of Yugoslavia Slobodan Milosevic was born on 29 August 1941.
