Plymouth Duster
|
The first Plymouth Duster was a fastback version of the Plymouth Valiant automobile, produced in the US from 1970 to 1976. Versions designed for several different market segments were produced, from economy to performance, often with fanciful names such as Feather Duster, Gold Duster, Space Duster (semi-hatchback) and Duster Twister. When it debuted in 1970, the standard V-8 was 318 cubic inches (5.2 L), but the top model featured the famous 340 wedge. Conservatively rated at 275 horsepower (205 kW), the motor could produce at least 310 horsepower (231 kW).

The 1976 Feather Duster was an engineering (if not marketing) success, featuring many lightweight parts including some aluminum body panels, it was, by far, the most fuel-efficent car in it's size class (along with a similar Dodge model). That same year, the Duster 360 was one of a select few truly high-performance cars remaining on the market.
Additional information is available in the Valiant article.
Later, the Duster name became a trim line of the Plymouth Turismo and Plymouth Sundance.
