Pitchshifter were a British metal band from Nottingham. Pioneers of industrial metal, they were known for their innovative use of drum machines and samples, but later played a fusion of metal and dance music. They broke up in 2003, after playing a farewell club tour in the UK. The band was originally started by Mark Clyden who took bass and vocal duties. Soon to join the band for vocal and programming input was JS Clyden. The band can be analysed as to having two eras. One in which the band played and pioneered British industrial metal with early albums such as Industrial and Submit. The band started to change in style on 1996's Infotainment album where they took on a hip hop influence. The band then released their breakthrough effort entitled 'www.pitchshifter.com'. This album saw JS Clyden change his singing style to a less 'shouty' style into what is now considered the 'Pitchshifter voice'. The two studio albums; 'Deviant' and 'PSI', which followed saw the band progress their trademark sound even further thus establishing them as one of the most respected Brithish bands. This caused the band to have a large and loyal fan base which still follow them through their 'indefinate hiatus'. Pitchshifter's guitarist Jim Davis went on to continue playing with Brritsh hard dance band The Prodigy before recently announcing his decision to leave. He also has worked with Keith Flint and now fronts his own band The One Condition. Mark and JS Clyden both now run their own PSI Records label which saw the release of the first Pitchshifter DVD and more recently 'This is Menace's' debut album which features members of Pitchshifter, Amen Amen and other bands. Bands inspired by Pitchshifter include Lostprophets and Hundred Reasons, both of whom have supported the band on numerous tours.
There are currently rumours circulating fan bases which suggest Pitchshifter are secretly in the studio working on new material. Front man JS Clyden quickly denied these rumours however it can be noted that his statements are often ambiguous and he has never said there no possibility of a reunion.
