Pink-collar
|
A pink-collar worker does work that is traditionally or most likely done by women, especially a male pink-collar worker.
Pink-collar workers perform secondary labour market jobs such as secretarial work, typing, teaching or other educative work, work involving children, work as a telephone operator, nursing, and cleaning. According to gender stereotypes common in Western society, these occupations are seen as ideally and naturally suited to women as they echo domestic responsibilities. Such stereotypes are said to reinforce traditional sexual divisions of labour in the household, limiting the opportunities available to women in the workforce.
The term "pink-collar" (pink being the colour normally associated with femininity) is intended to parallel "white-collar" and "blue-collar".
