Pigeonhole
|
Pigeon hole or pigeonhole has a variety of senses:
- Literally, a hole in which a pigeon lives.
- A container where messages are left for the owner of the "pigeonhole." These are common in schools where the teachers get students to put homework in the teacher's pigeon hole.
- A linguistic term — to pigeonhole someone or something, is to classify them or it into a certain category. For example, "I had him pigeonholed as a sports fan."
- The pigeonhole principle is a principle of combinatorial mathematics based on the observation that when there are more pigeons than pigeonholes, at least two pigeons must end up in the same hole.
