Pietro Carrera, 1573 to 1647, Sicilian chess player, priest, and author.
Carrera wrote about the origins of chess, the giving of odds (see Pion coiffé), the chess endgame, and blindfold chess. He was noted for a feud in 1634 with Alessandro Salvio after he (Carrera) suggested an improvement to Salvio's analysis of the Abrahams variation.
He also invented a chess variant on 8x10 board (Carrera's chess), predecessor of Capablanca chess.
