A Piņa colada is a sweet cocktail. The name is from the Spanish words piņa (pineapple) and colada (strained). The pulped or mashed pineapple is strained through a sieve. A non-alcoholic version is known as the Virgin Piņa Colada. It was created in a bar on Calle Fortaleza, Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, by a man called Monchito in 1954. A plaque on the faįade commemorates the cocktail's invention.
The drink was popularized by Rupert Holmes' hit song "Escape (The Piņa Colada Song)".
Recipe
- 3 fluid ounces (90 ml) light rum
- 3 tablespoons (45 ml) coconut milk
- 3 tablespoons (45 ml) pineapple juice
- Crushed ice
Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker. Shake well. Strain and serve with a pineapple garnish.
