Photo.net
|
photo.net is an online community for photographers. It was created by Philip Greenspun (website (http://philip.greenspun.com/)). Users of photo.net can view photos by other members, rate and critique photos, as well as submit photos of their own for ratings or critiques.
Sections
- Announcements: releases of new photographic products, major photographic events
- Regular columns: editorial along with technical contents. Currently "Sunday Morning Photographer" is one such column.
- Comprehensive "tutorial" articles for new photographers, as well as focus articles on different photographic projects (concerts, nature, photomicrography, etc.)
- User portfolio and critiques : members have the ability of uploading their own photographs, and comments on the portfolio of others.
- Equipment: often new equipment is subjected to an informal review by a photo.net member, which is then open to comments. Members also post classified ads for buying or selling equipment.
- Gallery: work from various photographers is usually featured as part of a tutorial series or destination guide.
Subscription and advertisement
- Photo.net is freely accessible to the public, and registration with the site (which enables portfolio access, among with other functionalities associated with membership) is free.
- To cover operating costs, regular users are requested to pay a yearly membership, which enables "Photo-alerts" (email notices of recent critiques on one's portfolio, or request for comments in the forums).
- As is the case with many large online communities, Photo.net pages serve ads (as of 2004 text ads from Google), and there are links to camera equipment stores, who pay a referrer fee for purchases made through the site.
