Phonetic
|
Phonetic ™ (pho-NET-ic) is a nationwide voicemail-to-text messaging service available for most digital mobile phones in which a subscriber is provided a custom voice mailbox for the purpose of receiving all incoming voice messages as actual transcribed text for reading via short messaging (also known as SMS, text messaging, txts, alphanumeric, and two-way) on mobile phones, other wireless handheld devices, alphanumeric pagers, and desktop e-mail.
Phonetic ™ voicemail transcription was created by Phonewire, Inc. (http://www.phonewire.com) as the world's first voicemail-to-text messaging service. The service was originally developed for major paging services in the early 1990's, but it is now available for a wide range of networks, including CDMA, TDMA and GSM systems. The first official Phonetic ™ transcribed voicemail text message is believed to have been sent in August 1993 from a landline telephone in St. Louis, Missouri to an alphanumeric pager on the PageNET POCSAG network in the U.S.

Technical details
Each subscriber is provided a personal voice mailbox in which calls are forwarded towards from existing mobile phones, office extensions, or home telephone numbers. When an incoming caller records a voice message and disconnects, the caller's complete recorded dictation (not just phonetic syllables as the product name misleads) is then translated into readable text and formatted to also include captured Caller ID from the originating voicemail message. Every voicemail message is transcribed immediately and transmitted individually to the subscriber-specified electronic destinations, such as an e-mail address and text messaging service provider.
Common slang
Since its inception and its growing popularity, many casual conversational uses (as a noun, singular and plural, and a verb) have been made to reference the Phonetic ™ voicemail transcription service, such as: "Hit me up later or drop a phonetic.", "I got her phonetics on my two-way, but I ain't calling her back.", or "Phonetic me those directions, I'll be there at 8!"
