PPPoE
|
PPPoE, point-to-point protocol over Ethernet, is a network protocol for encapsulating PPP frames in Ethernet frames. It is used mainly with cable modem and DSL services. It offers standard PPP features such as authentication, encryption, and compression. It's an odd sort of protocol because it's generally used to make Ethernet emulate a serial port which in turn is emulating an Ethernet connection.
PPPoE was developed by UUNET, Redback, and RouterWare. The protocol is published in RFC 2516.
