Prevention of Terrorist Activities Act
|
The Prevention of Terrorist Activities Act (PoTA) was enacted by Parliament of India in 2002, under the stewardship of the right-wing Hindu parties, the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Shiv Sena, under Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The act was widely perceived to be misused against the Muslim minority, who were systematically targetted and subjected to custodial torture and murders, and the Muslims of India systematically campaigned for its repeal. The Secularist parties, which later coalesced to form the United Progressive Alliance government of India, committed to repeal the Act during electioneering, and subsequently, the act was repealed in 2004.
