In the Star Trek fictional universe, the Personal Access Display Device is a fictitious hand-held LCARS-based computerized device resembling a PDA which provides wireless access to the main computers, other portable devices, or data stored on isolinear chips.
The standard small Starfleet-issue PADD is a gray ten by fifteen by one centimeter rectangle complete with two isolinear read/write drives, a subspace radio transceiver, a sixteen-hour battery, and a display/input screen of approximately eight by five cm. PADDs are produced in a variety of dimensions to accommodate panels of varying size.
The PADD is said to have inspired the design of the PDA and the Tablet PC.
However, the first PADD was seen in Encounter at Farpoint in 1987, and the first flat calculator-like PDA was in 1978.
