Operation Gaff

During World War II, Operation Gaff was a six-man patrol of Special Air Service commandos who jumped into German-occupied France on 25 July, 1944.
Their mission was to kill Erwin Rommel at his headquarters at La Roche Guyon. This was aborted when the German commander was wounded by an Allied fighter-bomber.
The team moved toward the American lines on foot while ambushing trains and attacking German units along their journey. They reached safety on 12 August.
