Notre-Dame of Laon
|
Notre-Dame of Laon is a cathedral located in Laon, France.
It dates from the 12th century and was built in the Gothic style. Its towers are decorated with statues of oxen. Notre-Dame of Laon is often cited as an example of the light, "giggling," and fun qualities of Medieval architecture. The presence of the stautes of cows in the highest towers inspires a whimsical feeling, as these lowly beasts of burden are lifted to the tallest parts of the cathedral. In addition, these cattle served to show the reward waiting for individuals. Used to help move heavy stones, the cows are honored with statues on the cathedral, reminding the public of their reward in Heaven.
