Category: OPERATIONAL (Awarded to members of the Armed Forces during times of conflict.) Definition: It is the highest gallantry award and is the senior most among civil and military awards. It is admissible to all ranks for acts of heroism/conspicuous courage in circumstances of extreme danger or devotion to the country in the presence of the enemy on land, at sea or in the air.
Please note that officially Nishan-e-Haider is not conditional to the sex (male or female) and neither to the person being nominated for this being (Ghazi) alive or martyred (Shaheed). The prestige of this award is apparent from the fact that since independance it has been awarded to a total of ten men at arms even though Pakistan has engaged in four wars (1948, 1965, 1971, 1999).
