The New River Valley is the name of the region in the vicinity of the New River in the U.S. states of West Virginia, Virginia, and North Carolina. It was one of the first frontier areas in the United States, and was key to encouraging western expansion. The first European to explore the valley was Abraham Wood of Fort Henry in 1671. The Valley has been the locus of significant parts of American History, and now is home to several million people.
