Nettuno is a town and comune of Rome province in the Latium region of Italy, 60 kilometers south of Rome. It is named in honour of the Roman god Neptune. A resort city and agricultural center on the Tyrrhenian Sea, it has a population of approximately 34,000.
The town was founded by the Saracens in the 9th century. A popular tourist destination today, there is a well-preserved old quarter with mediaeval streets and the Sangallo Fort constructed in the 1500s. The church has a popular shrine to Mary, with a mediaeval English style Madonna and Child statue, that is believed to be the popular mediaeval English statue Our Lady of Ipswich. It is widely called "the English Lady".
For plant-lovers, the Villa Borghese has extensive gardens.
The Nettuno American Cemetery and Memorial is the burial site for almost eight thousand American soldiers who died in the battle following the Allied landing at Nettuno and the neighbouring city of Anzio.it:Nettuno (RM)
