National Underwater and Marine Agency
|
The National Underwater and Marine Agency (NUMA) in the United States is dedicated to "preserving maritime heritage through the discovery, archaeological survey and conservation of shipwreck artifacts." Based on a fictional organization, the device of author Clive Cussler, the non-fictional version, NUMA, is a private non-profit organization headed up by Clive Cussler with the goal of preserving the maritime heritage through the discovery, exploration and conservation of shipwreck artifacts.
Cussler lives a life which closely parallels his protagonist in a series of highly successful adventure novels, Dirk Pitt, the head of the fictional NUMA. The real world NUMA is a non profit organization and has actually discovered many sunken ships.
NUMA found the CSS H.L. Hunley in 1995. Cussler along with NUMA have helped produce a television series on underwater exploration called "The Seahunters" on which you can see the discovery and subsequent removal and conservation. The show also features a number of other shipwrecks in various international locations.
