The Mumbai Police has the task of policing the vast metropolitan area of Mumbai, one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world.
Timeline
- 1661 - The Portuguese establish a police outpost in Mumbai.
- 1669 - Catherine Grand, Governor of Mumbai, organises the Bhandari Militia with Subhedars headquartered at Mahim, Sewree and Sion.
- 1673: First police station in Mumbai at Byculla
- 1769 - Formalised police training introduced
- 1779 - The post of Lieutenant is created to head the police force known as police chief until 1864. First police chief: James Todd
- May 20, 1812 - First police act
- December 14, 1864 - The post of Commissioner of Police is created. Sir Frank Souter became the first police commissioner of Mumbai and remained in office till July 3, 1888.
- 1864: First Indian to be made a police officer at Bombay
- April 10, 1919 - Mahatma Gandhi meets Commissioner of Police of Bombay in his office.
- 1924 - Traffic police formed 27 years after first car is sold in India at Bombay
- 1942 - First woman police constable: Mrs. Pancham Bala
- August 15, 1947 - First Indian to head the Bombay police due to India getting independence : JS Bharucha
- 1947: First woman police sub-inspector: Ms. Shanti Parwani
- 1965: First dog squad
- December 1, 1989: Narcotics Cell formed
