Mt. Washington, Los Angeles, California
|
Mt. Washington is a district in northeastern Los Angeles, California.
The district was founded in 1909 as a wealthy suburb of Los Angeles. As the mountain was far too steep for the construction of a proper road in the pre-automobile era, the new district instead was served by a funicular railway up the hill, which had its lower terminus at a Pacific Electric Railroad "Red Car" stop. Mount Washington was eventually absorbed into the city proper as Los Angeles grew toward Pasadena.
Homes on Mount Washington enjoy splendid views. The district is generally considered the most affluent area of Los Angeles' East Side. In recent years, gentrification occurring in Eagle Rock and Highland Park has made the area an even hotter destination for upscale Angelenos wishing to capture some of the flavor of pre-freeway-era Los Angeles.
