Mono (band)

Mono was a British pop duo which became a one-hit wonder in the late 1990s with their song "Life in Mono". The group is considered electronica or more specifically "trip hop" and Mono's music shares some similarities with other such acts including Sneaker Pimps and Portishead.
The band, formed London in 1996 consisted of the dainty but often ethereal vocals of Siobhan de Maré over the synth and keyboard sound produced by Martin Virgo. Virgo is considered a talented producer and programmer and had earlier collaborated with Björk on her album Debut among other acts.
The group broke up in 1998, and de Maré now sings for Violet Indiana featuring Robin Gruthie of the group Cocteau Twins. Violet Indiana has released two albums since and a singles collection since 2000. Virgo continues to produce for others.
Mono's hit song "Life in Mono" is found on their Formica Blues album and the single Life in Mono. The album was unfavorably received by many fans of the heavily-played track "Life in Mono". The Life in Mono single, released before Formica Blues, featured several remixes of the song including one with the band Propellerheads. This song was theme of the 1998 movie Great Expectations, starring Ethan Hawke and Gwyneth Paltrow.
Mono's entire discography consists of American and UK versions of Formica Blues, three releases of the Life in Mono single and a UK single Slimcea Girl (a track also found on Formica Blues).
Mono is also the name of an unrelated Japanese band.
