Mizithra cheese
|
Mizithra is a Greek goat cheese similar to Romano cheese in taste and consistency, and not unlike the familiar Greek feta cheese. It has a somewhat bold buttery, salty taste. It can be used in a fresh and soft state or when aged and hard. The later form is grated for use as a food topping.
Mizithra cheese was reportedly popular in ancient times. According to a legend popularized by The Old Spaghetti Factory (a US restaurant chain), the poet Homer subsisted on spaghetti and Mizithra while writing his Iliad.
