Mildred Taylor, born on September 13, 1943, is a writer notable for her fiction books for young readers about African Americans in the south in the twentieth century, including "The Land" and "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry", and Song of Trees, the latter won the Newbery Medal in 1977 and was made into a three- part television movie in 1978.
