Microwave power transmission

Microwave power transmission (MPT) is the practice of using microwaves to transmit power through outer space or the atmosphere without the need for wires. The idea dates back to the time of Nikola Tesla's experimentation with wireless power transmission from Wardenclyffe Tower in the 1900s.
Following World War II, which saw the development of high-power microwave emitters known as cavity magnetrons, the idea of using microwaves to transmit power was researched. However, while electricity could be converted to microwaves in a magnetron, no method was known for converting microwaves back into electricity. Then, in 1964, William C. Brown demonstrated a helicopter equipped with a device called a rectenna. The rectenna converted microwave power into electricity, allowing the helicopter to fly.

MTP is the most commonly proposed method for transfering energy to the surface of the Earth from solar power satellites or other in-orbit power sources.
