Michigan State Highway 62
|
Michigan State Highway 62, or M-62, is an arc-shaped surface road in southwestern Michigan. It has a western terminus at its junction with Michigan State Highway 140 near Eau Claire and takes an easterly direction toward Dowagiac, at which it takes a more southeasterly turn toward Cassopolis, where it meets Michigan State Highway 60 and makes an abrupt turn toward the southwest through Edwardsburg, where it meets US 12 and continues southward toward the Indiana state line, where it feeds to and from Indiana State Highway 23 toward Mishawaka and South Bend.
The path looks absurd; the highway is effectively two short highways combined into one route. No freak of topography dictates such a route. Michigan has long sought to build an expressway between Kalamazoo and the South Bend area, and the segment south of Cassopolis would probably be decommissioned if such a highway were ever built.
