Michael McGoldrick is a flute and tin whistle player. Born (late 1960s ?) to Irish parents in Manchester, United Kingdom, he is widely seen as one of the greatest living players of Irish music on the flute.
He performs across the British Isles and has competed in the Fleadhanna with Dezi Donnelly (fiddle) and John-Jo Kelly (bodhran). He has recorded several albums and also guested on many as well. His repertoire also contains tunes that he plays on the uilleann pipes, and he is widely considered one of the best whistle/flute players in the UK. He makes appearances at various local and national festivals and has run whistle/flute workshops at the Cambridge Folk Festival.
In 1994 he won the BBC Young Tradition Award, and in 2001 he was given the Instrumentalist of the Year award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.
McGoldrick formed the band Fluke! (later renamed "Flook") with Brian Finnegan and Sarah Allen in November, 1995. After one tour, he left to pursue other projects. In addition to his solo work, he has played regularly for Capercaillie, Afro-Celt Sound System and the Kate Rusby Band.
He has recorded a few albums. Morning Rory showcases his traditional skills, and Fused explores several other musical genres. His album At First Light with John McSherry goes back to his traditional roots.
