Michael Leunig

Michael Leunig (born in East Melbourne in 1945) is a noted Australian cartoonist whose best known works include The Adventures of Vasco Pajama and the Curly Flats series. He was declared a national living treasure by the National Trust of Australia in 1999.
There are several published books with collections of his drawings including A Bag Full of Roosters and The Second Leunig.
He produced the images for a series of Australian stamps and has recently had some of his works reproduced in claymation, which have screened on SBS Television and on the Street Vision system at underground train stations in Sydney.
His drawings can be found in The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age (Melbourne) newspapers published in Australia.
Michael Leunig is a very different type of cartoonist from the usual 'political commentator' type, in that his work often challenges forcefully the established philosophies and current ideologies within Australia. On occasions his work will draw passionate letter writing responses from readers either in support or offended by a particular cartoon. His drawings are done with a quavering line usually in black and white with ink wash and the human characters are always drawn with very large noses.
In more recent years there has often been an underlying spiritual level to his cartoons, and prayers written by Leunig are treasured and widely circulated in some Christian circles.
