Corgi Toys trade mark was begun in July 1956 by Mettoy Playcraft Ltd. in Swansea, Wales.
The high quality die-cast models were designed to compete with the very popular Dinky Toys model vehicles. In order to set themselves apart in the market, they introduced their models with clear plastic windows. This became part of their marketing and the slogan "The ones with windows" was trumpeted as a major selling point. The very first models were also available with flywheel motors in them.
