DaimlerChrysler AG planned to assemble a series of crossover SUV models to compete with the BMW X3, the Land Rover Freelander, and possibly others, including the Volvo XC60. DaimlerChrysler would brand the series under Mercedes-Benz. The name of this series is not yet known, but DaimlerChrysler AG has already made preparations to use "X-Class".
It is speculated that the X-Class will share the C-Class platform, and production plans continued after the demise of the similar Smart Formore. In 2005, it was announced that the vehicle will be built in Bremen, Germany, rather than at the company's Juiz de Fora, Brazil factory as had been expected.
