Memphis Mad Dogs
|
The Memphis Mad Dogs played at the Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tennessee for their one season (1995) in the Canadian Football League.
The Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium was even more poorly-suited to the Canadian game than most U.S. stadiums because the stands are very close to the field. The resulting game was, at least in Memphis, more or less the Canadian game played on a field of U.S. dimensions. The Mad Dogs drew fairly well at the gate until the start of the regular U.S. collegiate season. (The Canadian football season starts much earlier than its U.S. counterpart, largely because playing into December or January at outdoor venues in Canada is not an appealing option.) At this point it rapidly became apparent that this was not a viable venture, as attendance dropped below the 10,000 mark, and the team was discontinued after its only season, which marked the end of the CFL's unfortunate three years south of the border.Template:Amfootball-stub
