MediaWiki talk:Nogomatch

Template:Ilm

To set this up, select "Special pages" from the toolbox menu on the left side of the page. Then select "All System Messages". Scroll down to "Nogomatch." Copy the HTML from the MediaWiki page to yours. Edit it as you see fit and click "Save Page." --Hope that helps.

This is a nice feature, but I dont know how to implement it. I want to reccomend that somone expand the instructions on this feature to include what file to enter this code in and where in the file to enter it. Thanks ~ Dan

Ok here's some better instructions: In wikipedia, go to special pages and then system messages. Find Nogomatch. (or just go to the articles from here, its the same thing). Copy the text from the article. In your wiki, go to special pages, and then all system messages and find nogomatch. Edit the page and paste the text from wikipedia. You will need to edit some things to make it sutable, change wikipedia to your wiki's name etc. Save it and now it works.

If I go to e.g. Template:abc it invites me to create the article Template abc, the wrong name and even the wrong namespace, but easily overlooked. Perhaps the exact term entered is not available anymore, $1 being the modified one, but at least it can be made clearer what page is to be created by the link. I think I am going to adjust this, if nobody else does it before me.--Patrick 11:23, 18 Jul 2004 (UTC)

$1 is not the name of the article, so it can perhaps not be repeated in the link, but I think it is anyway a bit clearer now.--Patrick 01:30, 20 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Collusion with InterWiki

If the searched text is a valid format InterWiki link, the mapping will be expanded, and the "Create this article" link will take you to edit the page on the target site.

This is not really a problem -- except when the other site also runs MediaWiki.

Nice feature. Why a problem?--Patrick 01:13, 23 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Nothing warns you that it is taking you to another site.
I suppose it might be detectable from a change in the site design, but generally all MediaWikis use the same default stylesheet, and there isn't necessarily anything else very distinguishing.
On top of it all, it makes the "No such article by this name" potentially incorrect -- taking you to the edit page for an existing page on another site. - Keith D. Tyler [AMA] 07:30, Mar 23, 2005 (UTC)
Actually to the view page, regardless of existence. Yes, for this case the text is wrong, and also class='new' should be class='extiw'. A link [[entered text]] would be better, but I do not know how to change this, $1 seems to be the URL. Fortunately, it is unlikely that you search for something like "nl:trein" without intention to go to the other wiki. Thus it is a feature for insiders, harmless for others.--Patrick 09:14, 23 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Should be default configuration

It's hard to imagine why this isn't part of a default configuration. When I installed my Wiki there was no apparent way to create a new article and any others that I'd used always had this feature. I suppose this is an issue for those who maintain the source code.

I kind of feel the same way, but perhaps admins of other sites don't want to encourage creation of nonexistent links. I dunno. Still, the desire for this forces you to delve into the workings of MediaWiki and figure out what you need to do to make this work. :) OTOH, it would be nice to at least have this documented so that those who want the feature can find it a bit more easily. - Keith D.
