Maxine Waters (born August 15 1938), United States politician, has been a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives since 1991, representing the 35th District of California (map (http://nationalatlas.gov/printable/images/preview/congdist/ca35_109.gif)). She was born in St. Louis, Missouri, was educated at California State University, Los Angeles, and was a teacher and a volunteer coordinator in the Head Start program before entering the House. She is a member of the Congressional Black Caucus. Her husband, Sidney Williams, is a former U.S. Ambassador to the Bahamas.
Waters is well-known nationwide as a powerful advocate for the interests of African-Americans and impoverished persons of all races.
