The MAN (for: Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nrnberg, Augsburg-Nuremberg Machine Company) company is a German engineering works and truck manufacturer. It was founded in 1908 through the merger of Maschinenfabrik Augsburg and Maschinenfabrik Nrnberg. Rudolf Diesel got a prototype for the compression ignition engine functional in early 1897 while working at a Maschinenfabrik Augsburg plant at Augsburg, Germany.
MAN's coach operations merged with Neoplan of France in 2001 to become the third largest manufacturer in Europe.
