Manhattan Mall
|
Manhattan Mall is a shopping mall located in Herald Square in New York City.
The mall was once a bustling shopping attraction. Its most recent anchor store was Stern's department store. But when Federated Department Stores converted its Stern's locations into Macy's, the Manhattan Mall store was closed, as it was only two blocks from the world famous Macy's flagship store. The mall has been in decline and most of its numerous levels stand empty, with only the first and second levels and the basement floors occupied.
Prior anchor stores include Gimbel's and Abraham & Straus (A&S).

Template:NYC-stub When the mall first opened in the early 1990's, the mall was originally named "A&S Plaza." After the A&S name disappeared with the stores renamed either Macy's or Stern's depending upon the location, the name of the mall changed to its present form. Until 1998, the space occupied by A&S became the flagship store for Stern's (so named for the Stern Brothers who founded the chain). Presently, prior Stern's stores are now either Macy's or Bloomingdales.
