Main-gauche

In fencing, the main-gauche was a dagger used in the off-hand, mainly to assist in parrying, while the right hand wields a sabre, a rapier or similar longer weapon intended for one-handed use. The main-gauche is usually used to parry incoming thrusts, but may also be used for attack if the opportunity arises. It is rarely used today, as it was discovered that fencing with only the primary weapon allowed for greater balance and a stance offering a smaller target area. Its name is taken from the French language, literally meaning "left hand".
The term also refers to the style of fencing with a blade in each hand.
In modern sport fencing, the main-gauche is very rarely seen in competition, usually being reserved for exhibition demonstrations.
