Maggia River

The Maggia River is a river in the Swiss canton of Ticino.
The springs are near the Cristallina mountain and the river runs through the Val Sambuco, the Val Lavizzara, and the Valle Maggia, and enters Lago Maggiore near Ascona.
The river is used for hydroelectric power production, e.g. with the Naret and Sambuco dams near the sources.

Maggia is also a Village in the Vallemaggia District . It has 774 inhabitants (2000). In 2004 have been created a new comune with other villages (Moghegno, Aurigeno and Lodano). Since 2004 the new commune is called "Nuova Maggia" (New Maggia in Italian). It has about 2400 Inhabitants.
