Ma'anshan
|
Ma'anshan (Template:Zh-stp) is an industrial city on the Yangtze River (Chang Jiang) in Anhui province, about 50 km southwest of Nanjing. The main industry is the steel industry (MaGang) which employs most of the citizens of Ma'anshan.
The name sometimes appears as Maanshan, Ma'anshan or MaAnShan to indicate that "Ma" and "an" are pronounced as two syllables rather than one, although these are nonstandard romanizations. (Ma'anshan is the official pinyin romanization.)
The same Chinese characters are used to write Ma On Shan in Hong Kong.
Surrounded by little hills (Ma'anshan means horse saddle mountain) it is not as polluted as other major Chinese "steel cities". Caishi is a famous ancient battlefield, which lies in the southwest of the city. Caishi Rock is regarded as the best of the three rocks that project over Yangtze River. Taibai pavilion is one of the four famous pavilions along Yangtze river. Caishi scenic area is a national traveling spot, with a combination of natural and man-made scenes.
Ma'anshan boasts the Anhui University of Technology and Ma'anshan TV University.
In the near future (2004) major expansions of the steel plant (MaGang) are planned to increase production drastically.
